Achieving Success
- Set a Specific Objective: Define what behavior you want to achieve.
- Jot it Down: Write down your goal.
- Focus on the Prize: Keep your objective in mind.
- Develop a Plan: Create a strategy for training.
- Action: Put your plan into action.
- Record Results: Track your progress.
- Refine & Revise: Adjust your strategy and plan as needed.
Targeting a Behavior
- Define the Goal: For example, if the target behavior is for your dog to sit with its bottom on the ground, that becomes your specific goal.
- Behavior Card: Create a behavior card for each new trick your dog learns, noting the date when the behavior was first taught.
Structuring a Training Session
- No Talking: Avoid speaking to your dog during the session. This means no saying "sit," "down," "roll over," etc.
- Preparation: Have your clicker, treats, and other necessities ready.
- Documentation: Note the date, time, and specific behavior you're working on.
- Treat Allocation: Prepare 10 treats, but keep them out of sight.
- Conduct Trials: Perform a set of 10 trials, noting successes. Place treats aside if the dog is unsuccessful.
- End Session: Show your hands and say "all done" to signal the end.
- Record Progress: Tally your dog's scores, note the closing time, and record any issues.
- Repeat: Do 1 to 4 sets per session with short breaks, keeping sessions under 5 minutes.
With these steps, you'll be well on your way to creating positive habits for your dog. 🐾
