Teaching "Stand in Front" with a Lure

Introduction: We’re going to teach your dog to stand in front of you using a lure. This trick can be useful for obedience and other training exercises.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Get a Treat: Choose a treat your dog loves and hold it in your hand.
  • Start Position: Have your dog in a sitting or standing position by your side.
  • Show the Treat: Hold the treat close to your dog’s nose to get their attention.
  • Move the Treat Forward: Slowly move the treat forward and slightly away from your body, guiding your dog to follow it and stand in front of you.
  • Guide into Position: Continue guiding your dog until they are standing directly in front of you.
  • Mark the Behavior: As soon as your dog is in the correct position, say ‘Yes!’ or use a clicker to mark the behavior.
  • Reward: Immediately give your dog the treat and lots of praise.

Practice:

  • Repeat: Practice this several times in short sessions to reinforce the behavior.
  • Add the Verbal Cue: Once your dog consistently follows the lure to stand in front, start saying ‘Stand’ just before you move your hand.
  • Fade the Lure: Gradually phase out the treat by using an empty hand to guide your dog into the standing position in front of you. Reward with a treat from the other hand.

Tips:

  1. Always use positive reinforcement with treats and praise.
  2. Keep training sessions short and fun to maintain your dog’s interest.
  3. Practice with your dog sitting, standing, and lying down to ensure they understand the cue in different contexts.

By following these steps, you'll be able to teach your dog to stand in front of you with ease! 🐾 Ready to see those confident stands? 😊
