Teaching "Sit" with a Lure

Introduction: We’re going to teach your dogs to sit using a lure. This method is simple and effective for beginners.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Get a Treat: Choose a treat your dog loves and hold it in your hand.
  2. Show the Treat: Hold the treat slightly above your dog’s nose to get their attention.
  3. Move Your Hand Up and Back: Slowly move the treat upward and backward over your dog’s head. As your dog follows the treat, their rear end should naturally lower to the ground.
  4. Mark the Behavior: The moment your dog’s bottom touches the ground, say ‘Yes!’ or use a clicker to mark the behavior.
  5. Reward: Give your dog the treat and lots of praise immediately.

Practice:

  • Repeat: Practice this several times in short sessions until your dog understands the cue.
  • Add the Verbal Cue: Once your dog consistently sits with the lure, start saying ‘Sit’ just before you move your hand.
  • Fade the Lure: Gradually phase out the treat by using an empty hand to guide your dog into the sit position. Reward with a treat from the other hand.

Tips:

  1. Be patient and consistent. Every dog learns at their own pace.
  2. Always use positive reinforcement with treats and praise.
  3. Keep training sessions short and fun to maintain your dog’s interest.

By following these steps, your dog will master the “Sit” command with ease! 🐾 Ready to see those happy, sitting pups?
