Teaching "Roll Over" with a Lure

Introduction: We’re going to teach your dog to roll over using a lure. This trick is both fun and a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Get a Treat: Choose a treat your dog loves and hold it in your hand.
  • Start in a Down Position: Ask your dog to lie down.
  • Show the Treat: Hold the treat close to your dog’s nose to get their attention.
  • Move the Treat Up and Over: Slowly move the treat from your dog’s nose towards their shoulder, encouraging them to follow it with their head. This should cause them to roll onto their side.
  • Complete the Roll: Continue moving the treat in a circular motion, guiding your dog to roll onto their back and then over to their other side.
  • Mark the Behavior: As soon as your dog completes the roll, say ‘Yes!’ or use a clicker to mark the behavior.
  • Reward: Immediately give your dog the treat and lots of praise.

Practice:

  • Repeat: Practice this several times in short sessions to reinforce the behavior.
  • Add the Verbal Cue: Once your dog consistently follows the lure to roll over, start saying ‘Roll Over’ just before you move your hand.
  • Fade the Lure: Gradually phase out the treat by using an empty hand to guide your dog into the roll over position. Reward with a treat from the other hand.

Tips:

  1. Be patient and let your dog figure out the motion.
  2. Use a calm and encouraging voice throughout the training.
  3. Always use positive reinforcement with treats and praise.
  4. Keep training sessions short and fun to maintain your dog’s interest.

By following these steps, you'll be able to teach your dog to roll over with ease! 🐾 Ready to see those adorable rolls? 😊
