Teaching “Down” with a Lure

Introduction: We’re going to teach your dog to lie down using a lure. This is a great foundational command that can be used in many situations.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Get a Treat: Choose a treat your dog loves and hold it in your hand.
  • Start in a Sit Position: Ask your dog to sit first.
  • Show the Treat: Hold the treat close to your dog’s nose to get their attention.
  • Move the Treat Downwards: Slowly move the treat straight down to the ground between your dog’s front paws. This will encourage your dog to follow the treat into a down position.
  • Guide Forward: If needed, slightly move the treat forward along the ground to fully encourage your dog into the down position.
  • Mark the Behavior: As soon as your dog’s elbows touch the ground, say ‘Yes!’ or use a clicker to mark the behavior.
  • Reward: Immediately give your dog the treat and lots of praise.

Practice:

  • Repeat: Practice this several times in short sessions to reinforce the cue.
  • Add the Verbal Cue: Once your dog consistently follows the lure into a down position, start saying ‘Down’ just before you move your hand.
  • Fade the Lure: Gradually phase out the treat by using an empty hand to guide your dog into the down position. Reward with a treat from the other hand.

Tips:

  1. Be patient and let your dog figure out the motion.
  2. Use a calm and encouraging voice throughout the training.
  3. Always use positive reinforcement with treats and praise.
  4. Keep training sessions short and fun to maintain your dog’s interest.

By following these steps, you'll be able to teach your dog the “Down” command effectively! 🐾 Ready to see those pups lying down on command?
